The Pīwakawaka is one of Aotearoa’s most familiar little characters. Restless, curious and full of personality, it darts through the bush with its distinctive fan-shaped tail, often appearing as though it has come to see exactly what you’re up to.
For me, the Pīwakawaka carries a sense of home. It’s the cheerful forest spirit on a beautiful bush walk with you.
There’s something comforting about a bird so small and lively being instantly recognisable to so many New Zealanders. For those of us living away from Aotearoa, these familiar sights can become little anchors, reminders of where we come from and the places that have shaped us.
This piece is part of my New Zealand bird series, exploring ideas of belonging, identity and finding our way. The Pīwakawaka feels like the playful one of the collection, a reminder that we don’t always need to know exactly where we’re going.
Sometimes we just need to keep moving, stay curious and trust the way forward.
